Clarity or Trust: A CMDA Devotional

t may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.-C. S. Lewis

Helpers of Health – Section X: Community Health & Development  by David Stevens, MD

"A good community health program can save many more lives than curative services. I saw it happen as a young missionary doctor. When I arrived in Kenya, half of our admissions and half of our patient deaths were from preventable diseases. In those days, it was not unusual to do two to three cut downs a day on severely dehydrated children after multiple attempts to get IVs in them. We had an entire ward full of children with severe measles. A quarter of them died from complications. Next to it was a ward packed with TB patients getting their daily injections for a month or longer.

Prescriptions for the Heart: Coping with an Unexpected Pregnancy

“You cannot live your life other than walking in the truth. Your means are as important as your ends." -Chuck Colson

Once again, we a reprinting a "prescription of the heart" which may be found at Christian Medical Dental Association here. This one sensitively deals with the difficulties of an unplanned pregnancy. We thank CMDA for allowing us to reprint this helpful "prescription."

Coping With an Unexpected Pregnancy

Nothing puts fear and uncertainty in the life of an unmarried woman like that of an unexpected pregnancy. Raising a child is hard work at any age, even when married, especially if you are young. You may be embarrassed and have fear of being cast out by your family or friends. Some may advise you to terminate the pregnancy. Others will give you other advice. In the midst of all these unknowns, rest assured that your doctor cares about your health and well being of your baby.

Prescriptions of the Heart: Coping With Depression

If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.   CS Lewis

wikicommons
Jan Steen's Doctor's Visit: Wikicommons

In our last post, we introduced "Prescriptions for the Heart" are a series of biblically oriented patient information sheets that are written to help your patients cope with many of the life changing events that can occur over the course of one's life. Here is a link to that post.

Here is another well-written resource to share with your patients. We thank CMDA for allowing us to reprint this prescriptions.

Coping with Depression

Throughout our lives, we all experience sadness, unhappiness, or grief. These feelings may be
triggered by a traumatic occurrence such as illness or the death of a loved one, and they are
entirely natural and normal reactions to such losses. Some feelings associated with loss may be
quite intense, especially at first, but eventually most people are able to enjoy life again.
Sometimes a sense of sadness can come without any apparent connection to any negative events.
Regardless of its cause, when one’s sadness won’t go away, and other feelings such as guilt, or
symptoms like fatigue, changes in your appetite, disruption of sleep, difficulty concentrating,
restlessness, or irritability become associated with it, it is wise to discuss your situation with your
doctor.

Faith Prescriptions for Your Patients

Have You Heard God Calling to You?

"When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die.”  ― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

public domain
The Good Samaritan-Public Domain

You are going to hear one of my favorite Christian songs. I happened to see it on You Tube and it has some pictures of health care workers. I immediately thought of TCMF and all of the wonderful doctors, dentists, pharmacists, PAs, students, spouses  and nurses affiliated with our organization. They all serve as an inspiration to me, as well as many others.

I hope this will lift your spirits today. May we all listen carefully for the still, small voice calling us to follow Him. Who knows where it will take us?! At the conclusion of the music, there is another devotional by Dr Gene Rudd called "A Glimpse Into the Darkness"which first appeared at CMDA.  His thoughts challenge us to see God in the midst of suffering. One small change in the song-"set up fields" should be written "set a feast."

Introducing “The Dental Impact” and Dr Jeff Amstutz (TCMF Retreat Speaker)

To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.”  -CS Lewis The Four Loves.

head of The Dental Impact-CMDA
Dr Jeff Amstutz

Today, TCMF is excited to highlight the new dental ministry of CMDA, cleverly titled The Dental Impact. It is headed by Dr Jeff Amstutz. We have provided his greetings to the CMDA community. Link However, for all readers, we have also included, at the end of his greeting,  a compelling story from his time as a missionary dentist to Africa. TCMF welcomes Dr Amstutz who will be joining us as one of our main speakers at the Spring Retreat in May. Click here to learn more about this exciting upcoming event!

Dr.Jeff  Amstutz:

Transition. Often characterized and defined by words such as moving, improving, shifting and evolving, it’s a process of changing from one situation to another.
