President: Dr. Lloyd Hey

Dr. Hey is a spine surgeon who focuses on scoliosis and kyphosis. After attending Harvard Medical School, Dr. Hey was a resident in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Surgery Program. Following that he was a Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellow and then a Chief Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery, both at Children’s Hospital Boston. He then completed a combined Orthopaedic/Neurosurgical Adult Spine Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. After ten years as an Assistant and Associate Professor in Duke’s Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Hey founded his current practice – The Hey Clinic – to focus on innovative solutions, compassionate and individualized care, and exceptional customer service.
Vice President: Dr. Craig Fowler

Dr. Craig Fowler is a tenured Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at UNC and serves as the co-medical director of the North Carolina Eye Bank. He specializes in corneal transplantation, cataract surgery and laser vision correction. He has been honored with "Best Doctors" award biannually from 2001-2012. Dr. Fowler initially came to the triangle area in 1992 as an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Duke, and started hosting monthly CMDA dinner meetings in his home with the help of Dr. Ron Halbrooks. In 1994 he married Dr. Amy Folwer, and they continued to host the monthly dinner meetings in their home. Shortly after this time the Duke and UNC CMDA chapters united for the larger group dinner meetings. Bible studies and outreach activities proliferated, and within a few years the meetings relocated to various triangle church fellowship halls. Craig, Amy and her parents have been integral in hosting and serving the local TCMF chapter.
Treasurer: Dr. Amy Fowler

Dr. Amy Fowler is an Assistant Professor, Residency Director and Director of Medical Student Education for UNC's Department of Ophthalmology. She received her medical school training at UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Dr. Fowler did her residency in Ophthalmology at Duke University Eye Center. She completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UNC. Amy and her husband, Craig Fowler, have hosted CMDA and TCMF events since 1993.
Secretary: Dr. Charles and Rosemary Herbst

Charles is retired from UNC as professor of GI surgery. He completed medical school and surgery residency at University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, MS. He has been a member of CMDA for approximately 30 years and of TCMF since its founding in 2005. His wifeRosemary is a homemaker, but a schoolteacher by training and profession. They have two grown children, both married and living in Colorado and have 5 grandchildren. They are members of Chapel Hill Bible Church, where Dr. Herbst has served as elder, taught both in Sunday School and in a small men’s group, while Rosemary serves on the Cross Culture Missions Committee. Charles continues to teach third year med students on GI surgery at UNC and Rosemary is active in Pregnancy Support Services, CH Homeless Shelter, and Durham Rescue Mission.
Dr. Jay and Holly Anderson

Jay is an associate professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, School of Medicine and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Served on the faculty at UNC from 1980 – 1990 and then was in the private practice of anesthesiology in Sumter, SC for 18 years. Returned to UNC 3 years ago to rejoin the faculty. He and his wife Holly have participated in many short-term medical mission projects through CMDA and MMI in the Dominican Republic. Since 2001 they have been active as adjunct professors with International Christian Ministries, spending an average of one month per year teaching in Kenya and Uganda. They currently teach at the African Theological Seminary in Kitale, Kenya annually.
Holly obtained her B.S. from The University of South Carolina and later M.S. in Human Resource Management. She is a part-time consultant and has held positions such as a Medical Office Manager, and Executive Director of a Medical Society. She is past State President of the South Carolina Medical Association Alliance, the organization for spouses of physicians. She continues to teach on "Medical Marriage" in North and South Carolina. Along with Jay, they are adjunct professors at Africa Theological Seminary, and travel to Kenya yearly to teach. They have four children and six grandchildren.
Dr. Ronald Halbrooks

Dr. Halbrooks is the Medical Director at Sutton Station Internal Medicine and Galloway Ridge. He received his medical training at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. He is a member of First Baptist Church in Durham, NC. He is married to his lovely wife Mary and they have four daughters. Dr. Halbrooks has also lived and worked in both Ethiopia and China.
Dr. Alan Proia

Currently the Director of Duke’s Autopsy Services, Dr. Proia received his medical training at Weill Cornell Medical College and completed his pathology residency at Duke University medical Center. He also holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Rockefeller University. His research interests include: 1) the pathology and genesis of diseases affecting the eye and adjacent structures; 2) developing and validating tests to diagnose, predict prognosis, and tailor therapy in patients with cancer; and 3) the effect of cardiopulmonary bypass and glycogen storage diseases on the heart.
Dr. William and Darlene Parsons

Darlene is a public health nurse, with a BSN from Russell Sage College, and an MBA from University of Rochester. She has a special interest in hospice nursing and set up a home health followup program on the Navajo reservation and also worked at Glaxo in clinical research. Darlene is a founding editor of a Christian blog ministry called "The Wartburg Watch." She has worked with Mission Raleigh and is now embarking on a volunteer stint with profoundly handicapped children at the Tammy Lynn Center.
Bill graduated from Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School. He completed internal medicine residency at University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital, and cardiology fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. He was on the cardiology faculty at both Duke and UT-Southwestern in Dallas, after which he went into private practice at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Bill and Darlene returned to the RTP area in 2001. Since then, Bill has been practicing cardiology with Carolina Cardiology Consultants in Raleigh, at WakeMed and Rex Hospitals. He has been a member of CMDA since 1978.
Darlene and Bill have been married for over thirty years and are members of Chapel Hill Bible Church. They have three grown children and two rescue pugs.
